Book Printing: Custom Printed Program Book Series with Slipcase Box for National Museum of American Jewish History

The Challenge: Every year, the National Museum of American Jewish History strives to create a unique program book for its annual gala. Shunning traditional ad pages, the museum prefers to publish books on themes of interest to its donors, and asks the donors to sponsor specific pages or topics. In 2008. the museum opted to create not just one book, but an entire series: four recipe books, each centered around a Jewish recipe theme, packaged into a slipcase box. The only problem was, the initial estimate for the box exceeded the amount budgeted for the project.

The Solution: CRW Graphics consulted with Oxford Bookbinding to find an alternative to traditional chipboard boxes. The answer turned out to be a slip-case box using 24 point stock, which is folded and glued back onto itself to create 48 point construction material. This approach offered several advantages. Not only did it make for an attractive yet economical piece, but the printwork could all be done at CRW on its CD presses, which are capable of easily printing 24 points.

Along the way, another problem was encountered and overcome: predicting what size to make the box before the page counts of the books were formalized. In the end, the counts went right to the maximum that the box could tolerate without remaking the dies. The fit was snug but acceptable, resulting in a beautiful package that was unique among all other gala publications.
