When Kelli Cavanaugh, design professor and director of publications for the Tyler School of Art at Temple University, first created the concept for the 2003-2004 catalog, she knew it would require special attention from a high quality printer.
She also knew who to turn to: CRW Graphics and her Account Executive Will Glassman.
Why? Because Will and his team would be able to understand just what she needed, as well as how to help her get it as quickly and affordably as possible. And for Kelli, that level of trust is most important.
Kelli wanted the catalog to simulate a student sketchbook with small cards tipped in throughout the book to simulate post-its or reminders. After speaking with CRW, however, she learned that this approach wouldn’t work. More importantly, she also learned what would work.
As the only vendor to bid on the job with the ability to adjust to Kelli’s concept and scan the student sketches on a flat-bed scanner rather than traditional drum scanner, CRW was able to preserve as much of Kelli’s idea as possible. The catalog still feels like an authentic student sketchbook.
The cover was printed with silver ink on a black felt stock. CRW pressproofed the cover and adjusted the gray-scale images to render the effect the client was looking for. CRW also over-ran the covers with a slight type change, in order to create blank sketchbooks for the Tyler admissions office to pass out at college fairs.
The client and all that have seen it have wonderfully received the project. Special thanks to Bob McMonagle, who was responsible for production and traffic; Paul Mazzoni for estimating and planning; Bob Reilley and Joe Cheesman for scanning and pre-press advice; and Mark Sabatina and Jim Brigandi for their expertise and guidance during all of the press checks.
